Image No. 41 thru No. 44 – Zion
Back with the throngs at Zion, I managed to escape the crowds (the campground was full @ 830AM!!!!) by going up to the higher elevations toward the east entrance and exploring Pine Creek Canyon. It was an added bonus that the leaves had already turned, unlike the foliage in the valley which was basically unchanged.
I always find small canyons filled with opportunities. Trees against the colorful canyon walls, interesting rock formations or erosional details always intrigue me. I love to try to find abstracts in sand or mud patterns or in the rocks themselves, and to combine any of these into one “realistic abstract” where the components of the image are seen as an abstract at a distance, but reveal the actual subject only on closer inspection. In addition, the great advantage of these canyons on sunny days, is that you can continue photographing through much more of the day and take advantage of the reflected light off the canyon walls which helps light subjects that otherwise may be a bit flat and dull. And there will always be a bit of blue picked up from the sky within the canyon shadows which creates a great combination of colored light.
